It’s that time of year again…..no, not time to pick out your Halloween costume, but time for the major paint companies to announce their color selections for “Color of the Year” for next year. Recently, Sherwin Williams chose “Poised Taupe” (SW 6039) as their Color of the Year for 2017. Sherwin Williams describes this neutral color as a “modern classic and a beautiful balance of warm and cool.” We are seeing a shift away from the popular shades of grey from the last five years with this transition to taupe by adding some brown to create a more complex color. According to Sherwin Williams, “Earthen brown combines with conservative grey and the result is a weathered, woodsy and complex neutral that celebrates the imperfections and authenticity of a well-lived life.”
PPG Paints also recently announced their color selection for 2017. They chose, “Violet Verbena” (PPG1169-5) PPG calls it “A grounding violet nuanced with a shade of gray.” Like Sherwin Williams, PPG is transitioning from grey but has added a purple hue instead of brown. PPG feels that it’s “the perfect backdrop for consumers looking to blend the masculine, the feminine, the mystic and the modern.” It’s a bit reminiscent of Pantone’s selection from last year of both “Rose Quartz and Serenity” as appealing to both the feminine and the masculine.
Benjamin Moore has yet to announce their color selection for next year but is due to announce in the next several weeks. Last year, Benjamin Moore broke from other paint companies and chose “Simply White” as their 2016 Color of the Year. We’ll see if they also follow the trend of transitioning away from grey.
